Overview

  • APS-C CMOS sensor
  • 18-MP
  • 3-inch LCD Screen, 460,000 dots
  • 1080p Video Capture

Features

The 18MP APS-C CMOS sensor featured in the Canon EOS 1200D is certainly not the most powerful around, but in terms of an affordable model that has been marketed towards new customers, it is more than enough for anyone’s first DSLR.

So, while the DIGIC 4 processor isn’t the newest from Canon, it still provides ample power to provide reliable performance levels. For example, it can shoot at 3ps when in continuous mode that results in 69 JPEGs or six raw files each time.

Also, the sensor itself is relatively small in size, allowing the 1200D to maintain a very compact size.

As this is very much a model aimed towards entry-level customers, the Canon 1200D features various automatic modes for easier use. For instance, the Scene Recognition mode will ensure that not many settings will need to be adjusted for the most part, and the presence of Creative Modes will allow a user to try out some new styles with minimal difficulties.

Video recording is also possible at Full HD (1080p), so you can easily try your hand at shooting some high resolution videos as with all of Canon’s DSLR range. Manual control can be used as well for recording, which is certainly handy for beginners looking to learn the ropes.

As for the native sensitivity of the 1200D, it begins at 100 and can rise to 6400, with a further 12,800 capable when expanded. Image noise can be of a concern with higher levels as a result, although it’s not too noticeable and images still remain very clear.

Thanks to a great white balance detection system, white balance can be easily controlled. Colours are beautifully captured with the 1200D, with lots of accurate vibrancy present in every image, whether it’s the sky above in a landscape or the colour of an individual’s skin in a portrait.

The nine-point autofocus can be somewhat disappointing when compared to other models and this is also the case when you consider there is only one cross-type sensor that provides better accuracy when focussing.

When using the view finder, the autofocus works well enough in brightly lit environments. Images maintain a nice sharpness to them even with moving images, so the 1200D can be a fine option for taking to live sports events or when capturing wildlife image.

Final Thoughts

While there is certainly features missing and aspects of the hardware that wouldn’t appeal to more seasoned photographers, it should be reminded that Canon’s 1200D is almost exclusively targeted at first-time DSLR buyers.

When this is taken into consideration, the 1200D does really impress. It’s very user-friendly and has various modes available that will appeal to beginners looking to try their hand at some DSLR photography.

This is reflected in the price of the 1200D too, which happens to be one of the most affordable rates for a Canon DSLR camera!
