Canon EOS 700D

The Canon EOS 700D is the successor to the very popular EOS 650 D and is considered an upgraded alternative model to the compact EOS 100D. Canon’s three-letter range of DLSRs have become massively popular from entry-level to mid-level models, and the EOS 750 looks to continue that trend.

Features

The Canon EOS 700 features the same sensor as found in previous models, the impressive CMOS APS-C capable of 18-megapixels. It’s native ISO range is 100-12,800 and can reach a further 25,600 with extension.

In addition to this, the EOS 700D’s Hybrid Auto Focus works together with phase-detection and contrast technologies that help to produce a senor with some seriously impressive performance levels.

Moreover, the EOS 700D features the DIGIC 5 processor from Canon that will ensure consistently high performances from the DLSR.

Video capture is possible too with the sensor. Full HD 1080p recording can be performed at 24, 25, or 30fps. Lowering the resolution to 780p allows for recording at 50 and 60fps too. Also, microphone stereos are situated at the upper plate of the camera.

When shooting, the LCD screen can be rotated to higher or lower angles thanks to the vari-angle design, allowing for plenty of flexibility too.

It’s also a touchscreen with a sensitivity that can be compared to that of a smartphone – you can easily set a focus point when in Live View and zoom by pinching the screen just like a smart-device.

The 9-point diamond AF arrangement present in the 700 is the same as the previous 650 model. While nine points could be considered inferior to similarly priced models from other manufacturers, each one is cross-type, making them extra sensitive to movements and any horizontal or vertical subject.

Canon has upped the Creative Filter feature from older models by allowing users to preview any filter prior to capturing it. Not only that, but users now have the option to save an unfiltered image alongside any filtered ones to allow for handy comparisons.

One drawback with the EOS 700 is the lack of Wi-Fi, so the fact you can’t easily transfer files between the DSLR and other devices may be considered a bit of a nuisance to some.

The overall picture quality is fantastic, as you would come to expect from a Canon DSLR. Colours remain very natural thanks ot the Auto White Balance that performs exceptionally well. Present colour temperatures are available too, and with the additional of many picture styles, an image’s quality can be altered to suit any preference.

Better still, image noise is essentially non-existent with the 700D, particularly with ISO settings below 800. Some texture noise can appear above this although higher settings are still very useable in any case.

Final Thoughts

The Canon EOS 700D isn’t a massive step-up from the 600D, but it is still a fantastic DSLR that performs brilliantly. Image quality is great, and with a host of additional features and settings available, users will find plenty to enjoy with this model.

It also comes with a reasonable price, making it a fine option for anyone looking to upgrade their older DSLR model.
