TOP MOST USEFUL DSLR ACCESSORIES … THE CAMERA BAG!

(Includes boxes, rucksacks and other paraphernalia)

A mischievous guide by Antoine De Bent

As a professional photographer of some 30 years’ experience I feel more than qualified to extol the virtues and vices of the humble camera bag. My love/hate relationship with camera containers has left me mentally and physically scarred.

One thing’s for sure, if you have expensive camera gear then look after it; box it, bag it, cover it … protect it at all costs.

Follow my advice but not my example! Here we go:

  • THE CAMERA BAG

Let me make it clear, there’s not a camera bag ever been made that I haven’t tripped over, driven off with it on the top of my car or left behind in a church or pub!

Camera bags are meant to protect and organise your photographic equipment. They can’t however compensate for dough heads like myself. OK, the message is, look after your gear by looking after your camera bag.

The tradition camera bag looks a somewhat like the one opposite; made of soft canvas, leather or similar water resistant material.

This is actually a very classy canvas bag, The Messenger from Evecase. The case is large enough to take, and has a compartment for, a laptop; how times have changed.
The Messenger is well laid out and compartmentalised to take a DSLR plus accessories. It even comes with a totally rain-proof cover. A well thought through design complete with shoulder strap and carrying handle.

Of course camera bags come in many sizes with several variations in styling and features. This particular bag is quite large to accommodate more than just a camera and standard lens. Think about your own personal requirements, what do you plan on carrying?

A lot of camera bags have a set of straps on the bottom to accommodate a small tripod, jolly good idea. Over the years I had quite a few canvas bags, and believe me they are a practical lightweight solution to carrying camera equipment.

Although, you may need a smaller bag if you’re just carrying a DSLR, a couple of lenses and a round of sandwiches.

I hasten to add that it really is unwise to carry food or, especially, drinks, in your camera bag! Been there etc. etc.

THE BACKPACK

The rise in popularity of the backpack is understandable; hands-free transportation allows you to indulge, and combine, your passion for photography with another activity. Backpacks are now, of course, specifically designed to accommodate camera equipment.

Just take a look at this beauty! It’s the YuHan Oxford large capacity backpack.

Look how well the equipment is organised, not a sandwich in sight.

Backpacks are not for all occasions but they are a practical solution for those on the go; an absolute must for you, more adventurous, Bear Grylls types.

Check out the vast range of makes and styles on offer; you will find a use for one someday!

The next ‘camera container’ is probably my favourite type of case.

THE ALUMINIUM CASE

Often referred to as a flight case; it can be used to carry anything your heart desires. You can design the interior to suit your own requirements as each case comes with, usually, pre-cut foam squares that can be removed to create snug spaces for your camera and accessories.

I particularly like aluminium cases because they’re sturdy, ideal for careless folk like myself; I’ve even been known to stand on mine, not recommended! The hinges will eventually give and you’ll end up on the floor, trust me, I know.

Aluminium cases are reasonably inexpensive; the above model is a Crystal and retails for around £30. There are a range of makes, styles and sizes plus, also, many available in a swish black finish.

What’s more, an aluminium case just looks so professional!

Last word of advice;

Sadly we live in a world full of ‘sticky fingers’; your camera bag is an easy target for any opportunist thief. So, always keep an eye on it, keep it close to hand.

However, that’s often easier said than done, especially if you a dunderhead like me, or you’re working under pressure. In a split second you could lose hundreds of pounds worth of gear; a sickening experience.

Of course there are other ways of losing your precious valuables; a very good way, I’ve found, is to put your camera bag on the roof of your car … you’ll hear it fall of as you approach 30 mph, works nearly every time for me!

GET YOUR CAMERA EQUIPMENT INSURED against accidental damage and theft!

It doesn’t cost a fortune and will afford you peace of mind.

Remember, follow my advice, but not my example.

Best Dslr Camera Under 400

In addition to this, with a secondhand camera, there may be small issues with the way in which the camera functions which could be incredibly difficult to spot for a new user. Basically, your camera may not be pumping out the best photographs and you would be none the wiser. Buying a Digital Single Lens Reflex camera or simply DSLR camera can be a challenging endeavor for someone who has no experience in doing so. Both newbie and professional photographers have come to realize that these cameras offer the best image quality in terms of resolution and shutter speed. A Digital Single Lens Reflex camera allows users to take professional images, which can be used in virtually all industries you can think of.
